Statement of Conviction or What If Artists were actually Entertainers by Justin Gabriel McInteer Listen: Disciplines are diverse and complex and thanks to the mass-media-infiltration of our cerebral cortex, we have preconceived ideas on just about everything. (a consciousness of synchronous simulacra) With my pseudo-mystical-esoteric-pop-mentality, I attempt to mix and match, hodge and podge, connect and detach these preconceived notions into new strands of chimerical consciousness. Like all good religions, philosophies, mythologies, and wholistic belief systems before mine, I bend, shape, mend, and mold eclecticism into an eccentric reality tunnel. Creating a paradoxical relationship between all things. (keep in mind, things are verbs) Ideals: The work itself is event based installation. Like the wondrous travelling sideshows from yesteryear, I utilize ornately colorful enticements to lure viewers into the content of the piece. All the components of the installation synchronize into a macro-micro-cosmic relationship creating an open forum for the viewers own wonder or astonishment. Components of an Installation: The Theme or Narrative. (the eclectic consolidation of content into a unified whole) The Design. (the formal arrangement of the various components) The Artifacts. (the objects, text panels, and drawings utilized to illustrate the narrative) The Viewer. (the physical layout of the piece for the anticipated viewer, including sound, smell) The Space. (the transformation of the existing space into the event space) The Souvenir. (the take-away postcard, trinket, or narrative) Reality or Plain English: The work is first and foremost intended to be entertaining. It is my desire to have viewers smile and have a good time while viewing the piece, and if I can spark any sense of wonder, I consider the piece a success. I had fun at the art show, now thats a compliment.
